Instructions For Assistants

Interpreting email instructions.

Most emails you will receive from me will be forwards of text, links and articles with instructions at the top. These instructions will be short and concise and may require additional explanation. I will do my best to include as much information here on this wiki, but if you ever need additional help, please email me back right away.

You will have three basic tasks assigned to you.

  • Internet research
  • Composing, writing or web editing (including editing on the wiki)
  • Emailing specific recipients.

Internet research

  • Use synonyms and different search terms and run your searches several times on different search engines to get as great a variety of results as possible.
  • First seek out the language used by industry professionals and in professional research on the subject to become familiar with the correct search terms needed for your query.
  • Get used to delivering results as text of email, so keep results that aren't text down to a minimum. Unless otherwise noted, please do not return results in attachments, but rather as text copied into email in a list or in a table.
  • All instructions will be delivered as followed:
    • TIME LIMIT: The most amount of time I want you to spend on this task
    • REQUIREMENTS: A checklist of must-have criteria for the results
    • PREFERENCES: A list of preferred but not mandatory criteria for the results. Again, these aren't required criteria, but would be nice to have. If your search returns too many results, these can be used to narrow the results down.
    • DELIVERABLES: The form that the task results should take upon delivery to me
    • EXAMPLES: I will include one or two examples of expected results to help you seek the right kind of results. You will find the rest.
    • EXPECTED DELIVERY: Due date for delivery of task results

Adding topics, clips and link list to the dossier

Linked to from http://samesexsunday.wikidot.com/2010-topics, each Topics Page has a "Topics/Dossier of clips and notes" section near the bottom. This is the area where you will be adding the links and news clips.

Creating a link

Throughout the week, I will email you links to articles that must be added to the dossier. You will receive forwards from news lists or links with links in them. At the top, I will include instructions, such as "Add to 12/05, Link, DADT" or "Put in 12/05, Link under DADT topic." This means that I would like you to add a link to the article forwarded to you under the "DADT" topic on the Topics page for the 12/05 show, which is located at http://samesexsunday.wikidot.com/2010-12-05-topics, and listed as "2010_12_05 Topics" on the 2010 Topics master page.

In "edit" mode, you will add the clips as an indented bulleted list bellow the heading "Topics/Dossier of clips and notes" under the topic headings I give for each clip. For example, if I email you an article and also send the note to you "please file this under 'DADT,'" you will find the topic heading 'DADT' and place the link there. Please use the instructions on "links" in http://www.wikidot.com/doc:wiki-syntax#toc19 to set up a link with the link text as the Source of the Article (Advocate Magazine, Washington Post, New York Times), the last name of the Author and the Title of the Magazine.

For example, if I send you an article from the Advocate Magazine by Kerry Eleveld titled "My View From Washington: DADT repeal," the link text will read "Advocate: Eleveld: "My View From Washington: DADT repeal." The link will be constructed by typing [[[http://advocate.com/article | Advocate: Eleveld: "My View From Washington: DADT repeal.]]] See the wiki-syntax page for more instructions.

Creating a topic

At some points I will email you articles and ask you to file them under topics that have not been added to the wiki page yet. If this is the case, you will start a new topic on the list.

The topics lists is a bulleted list. Each topic is an un-indented bullet, and the clips and links bellow these, filed under each topic, are indented. For example.

Bulleted lists

Instructions for creating bulleted lists are located at http://www.wikidot.com/doc:wiki-syntax#toc13.

Creating a news clip

At times I will have to forward you text with no link, because I have been mailed a press release. If this is the case, I will indicate in my email to you "news clip" and the topic that the news clip belongs to, for example, "Add to 12/05, News Clip, DADT." If this is the case, you will need to add the clip as a collapsible block under DADT (or whichever topic I give you).

The instructions for creating collapsible blocks are located here: http://www.wikidot.com/doc:wiki-syntax#toc18.

For the text to "show," use the title of the Press Release. If you are unsure about the text to show, email me back and I will tell you. The rest of the press release should be added to the "hidden" text. PLEASE REMOVE ALL EMAIL FOOTERS THAT INDICATES THE MAILING LIST THAT THE PRESS RELEASE WAS SENT FROM. Also exclude all header information that includes email addresses or names of Google Groups or mailing lists.

Templates

Templates for the Topics pages are available at http://samesexsunday.wikidot.com/topics-template. Go into "edit" mode and copy the code. Cancel all changes and don't save, to assure that the template remains the same. Paste the code copied from the template on the blank page for the topic date.
